Collections, charge-offs and late payments
Find out which negative items on your report can be challenged.
Collections, charge-offs and late payments can be disputed when they are inaccurate, incomplete or cannot be verified. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the credit bureaus have to investigate a dispute, usually within about 30 days, and correct or delete what turns out to be wrong or unverifiable. Accurate, timely items are a different story. They stay on your report until they age off, which is about seven years for most negative items.
Daisy reads all three of your reports, separates the items that have a real basis for a dispute from the ones that do not, and tells you plainly which is which.

Who this is for
- You have collection accounts you do not recognize, or that list the wrong balance or the wrong creditor.
- A charge-off still shows a balance after you paid or settled it.
- Your report shows a late payment in a month you know you paid on time.
- An old debt was sold to a new collector and the dates on your report changed.
How Daisy handles negative items
Every item is checked against your records
Dates, balances, account status and the creditor's name are compared across all three reports. Differences between the bureaus are often the first sign of an error.
Disputes go only where the facts support them
Daisy files disputes on the items that are inaccurate, incomplete or unverifiable, with each bureau that reports them. Disputing accurate items rarely works and can get later disputes flagged as frivolous.
You hear every bureau response
The bureaus answer each dispute, usually within about 30 days. You learn what was corrected, what was deleted, what was verified and what the next step is.
You hold off on new credit
While the work is in progress, you do not open new accounts. A quiet file lets every correction count.
What can be challenged, and what stays
Items with a basis for a dispute
- A collection that is not yours, or that belongs to someone with a similar name
- A balance that does not match what you owe or what you paid
- The same debt reported twice, by the original creditor and by a collector
- A late payment in a month you paid on time
- An item past the seven-year reporting period that still shows
- A debt re-aged with a newer delinquency date after it was sold
- Anything the creditor or collector cannot verify when challenged
Items that stay until they age off
- A late payment that happened and is reported correctly
- A charge-off that is accurate in every detail
- A collection you owe, reported with the right balance and dates
Anyone who promises to remove accurate, current information from your report is promising something the law does not allow. For an accurate late payment, a goodwill letter to the creditor is a request, not a right.
Questions
What people ask about this.
Can you remove a collection that I actually owe?
A collection that you actually owe, reported with the right balance and dates, cannot be removed through a dispute. It stays until it ages off, about seven years from the original delinquency. What Daisy can do is check whether every detail is right, because a wrong balance, a wrong date or a duplicate entry is disputable.
Does paying off a charge-off raise my credit score?
Paying off a charge-off does not always raise your credit score, because the charge-off mark and the balance are tracked separately. The account can update to a paid charge-off while the negative remark stays. Payment can still matter when a lender requires zero balances, so Daisy reviews how it is reported before you send money.
How long does a credit bureau have to answer a dispute?
A credit bureau generally has 30 days to investigate a dispute, and up to 15 more if you send new information during the investigation. If the item turns out to be inaccurate or cannot be verified, it has to be corrected or deleted. Daisy tracks the response from each bureau separately.
A collector called about a debt from years ago. What should I do?
When a collector calls about a debt from years ago, do not confirm it or make a payment on that call. In Texas, a partial payment can restart the four-year window a creditor has to sue. Ask for written validation, then check the dates on your reports, where re-aging is a common and disputable error.
Is it legal for a company to dispute items for me?
It is legal for a credit repair company to dispute items for you when the disputes are truthful and follow the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Reliable Credit Solutions is a registered Credit Services Organization under Texas Finance Code chapter 393 and follows the Credit Repair Organizations Act. You can also dispute on your own for free, and Daisy will tell you that on the call.

Disputes
Can you remove a late payment from your credit report?
If the late payment is accurate, no one can force it off early. Here is what a goodwill letter really is, when a dispute applies, and the honest path forward.

Why paying off a charge-off does not always raise the score
Paying a charge-off feels like the obvious move, but the score does not always reward it the way most people expect. Here is what actually happens on the report.
Disputes
When a collector calls about a debt from years ago: zombie debt in Texas
Old debts get sold for pennies and resurface years later. In Texas, one small payment can restart the clock on a lawsuit. Know the rules before you say yes to anything.
